Join the cult, 

Universities will hardly hire a janitor without a Doctoral degree.  Self perpetuating behavior, they train all their graduates that they should rely only on others that have invested in academia. Follow the money.

Only thing is....   the more Degrees out there the less valuable they are(capitalism). It's also a class(a group sharing the same economic or social status"loved the pun") system, Ivy League's at the top.

Nice cast system. Resistance is futile, prepare to be Assimilated.
